Boeing move to bring immediate jobs to the Lowcountry October 29, 2009
Boeing plans to break ground on its news 787 Dreamliner plant in North Charleston next month.
On Thursday, South Carolina Commerce Secretary Joe Taylor told News 2 that up to 1,700 construction jobs would start almost immediately.
Taylor said it will take all kinds of construction jobs to build the plant, and he expects to draw people from across the Southeast.
It’s still not certain which companies will be hiring.
“I think they’ll announce who the contractor is here very shortly,“ said Taylor, “and of course they’ll be subcontracting it and I’m sure there’ll be some type of public awareness made of the jobs that are available down there.“
As for the plant itself, Boeing will hire at least 3,800 people.
But state officials say suppliers and satellite industries will create thousands of spinoff jobs as well.
Taylor says Boeing will hire about a thousand assembly line workers and thousands more in engineering, administrative and clerical jobs.
The jobs will become available in a year to 18 months.

It would be sweet, I was born and raised in Charleston (West Ashley). Haven't worked there in years but I do love visiting.

I live in Chas. too...Worked on the Voight and Global facilities (Boeing just bought out Voight, I think it was, and they're part owners in Global) They are huge buildings, but not a lot of pipe, what pipe there is is mostly compressed air for tools. There is a fair amount of chill and hot water, they do believe in climate control! I'm sure you've seen pictures of Everette Wa facility. Big, empty and wide open spaces...Lots of gantry cranes... The SC Employment is gearing up really fast to be training the people they'll need.

I've done the last 5 winters in pipe racks and power houses in NE and the two before that in MI so yeah I wouldn't mind some in SC.

Boeing left Washington state because of the machinists union that caused them problems. Boeing will build a plant in Charleston and it will be Union. They don't hire un-educated people. A GED will barely get your foot in the door as a janitor. They don't hire pipefitters and pipewelders let alone structural welders. Most maintenance postitions require a college degree. They hire professional people like CNC machine operators, turbine mechanics etc. The satelite sites might offer some unskilled positions.
The building phase will need all trades as required.
Glad to hear Northern jobs are heading South.. |

Wolve..I've worked for Boeing and have all the inside info. When that plant is finished in Charleston, go apply for a job... It will be Union..They won't pay $35 an hour for machinists like they did in Washington. But they will pay around $25... |

the Boeing people already working here, and at what used to be Voight,(since bought out by Boeing), recently voted almost 100% to void their association with the machinist union. They're NOT union, it's going to stay like that... That's a major reason they're building the new line here. I've heard rumors (from Seattle) that this is the first step to pulling out of Washington state all togather. And let me clue you in on something, $25 an hour will get you a heck of a lot farther here than $35 will in Washington... It's not the $, you'll have a better quality of life...Those guys that make the move here, and there will be a bunch, will be very content. No mountains though. And our shoes and belts don't turn green in the closet.

CNC machine operators are no more professionals than pipers of welders, I know many with BS, and make more money than they would in their field.

North Charleston has one of the HIGHEST Crime Rates (murders) per capita in the United States. I have worked there several times over the years. Last August I was approached and attempted to be robbed at gunpoint at 6:00 a.m. on the way to work. I would highly suggest to anyone working in that area DO NOT STAY IN NORTH CHARLESTON! |

Maybe I was wrong about it being Union? But most Boeing plants are strictly Union. And before you get hired you have to pass two interviews. One is an aptitude test that takes over 4 hours and includes addition and multiplication of Fractions, Integers, geometry, algebra, some minor calculus and trigonometry questions.
Steel Mills give a similar test but not quite in depth..
Go ahead and apply then. |

I hear ya Merlin! I live in Jacksonville, FLA and that's a hop skip and jump away from here. If you or anyone else hears whom is getting the civil and construction phase, please feel free to post some Contractors in here. I've never been to Charleston but heard it's a beautiful town. |
