Mining, oil and gas construction is booming in Australia. Australia has major supplies of natural resources. As you all know China's economy is growing at a rapid rate and they are buying all the mineral resources Australia can provide. Because of this mining, oil, gas and natural mineral plants are springing up all over Australia. The Australian government is begging for overseas workers. Do a google search on skilled labor shortage in Australia and see for yourself.
Just so you understand, I am not a recruiter. I am a U.S. citizen that was recruited by an Australian construction company. I am a Construction Manager/Engineer.
There is a lot of money to be made here. Wages are very high, but be aware taxes are high too. Currently most companies are recruiting from the U.K. and southeast Asia. They are looking for mainly tradesmen and construction engineers. Most projects are in remote areas of Western Australia. Jobs are Fly-in Fly-out and 4-6 weeks on and 1 week off.
Please do a google search on Australia mining/constructionjobs and see for yourself.
If you have questions I'll be glad to help out my fellow Americans.

I worked with some Australians in Alaska last Dec. who said the same thing. They said the Government would help find sponsors as well.

Do you have any leads on certain companies?

The Australian government is making it very easy for companies to recruit overseas. I am currently on a 457 visa. It is a 4 year temporary work visa. After applying, it takes about 4-6 weeks to get approval. You will have to pass a medical exam and police record check.
I work for a civil contractor mostly working on concrete packages on major mining and oil/gas projects. Most of the employees we hire are concrete related workers. We are currently working on a major LNG plant expansion($2billion). I am aware of mechanical/structural and Electrical/Instrumentation contractors in Western Australia. Let me know what you are looking for and I'll try to help.

I am an Industrial Insulator(pipe/tank/duct). I am guessing a recruitment agency would be my best avenue.

That's awesome. I've been looking into it off and on, but seems it'd be a lot easier if you already had a job opportunity. I've checked about visa's, and I qualify for a permanent (5 year) visa. I've been wanting to go to Australia for years now, and so has my wife. Our plan was to go for a few months after her youngest daughter graduated and moved out (5 years from now!). This would be a nice way to go over sooner, and maybe let the kids see another part of the world besides east Texas (and the occassional weekend visiting me out of town. lol

Thanks John. I'm going to check out those sites!

The Australian government has a list of occupations that are in demand. The majority of the listing is skilled tradesmen. Any trades on the list they welcome overseas applicants and make it easier to migrate. The website is: www.immi.gov.au

Butch, I am sure there are may welding inspector jobs available because of the huge amount of structural/mechanical/fabrication work going on. All can I tell you is to do a google search on mining, oil and gas jobs in Australia and see what turns up. Also try the recruitment companies. One of the biggest companies recruiting for trades is www.hays.com.au

Anybody can get a U.S. passport as long as you don't owe back taxes or back child welfare payments, etc. A passport is only identification for overseas travel. As for the DUI, not a problem, I have one and still managed to get an Australian Visa.
If you have over 20 years welding you should qualify for an occupation on the Australian Immigration website. I think truch drivers are on the list too.
Also, if you're disgruntled with work in the U.S. doesn't mean it's going to be any better in Australia. There is the same bull**** here that you have to put up with as in the U.S. The only thing I'm saying is there are many opportunities here to improve your quality of life. Just for the record, I love the U.S., I'm only here in Australia to make some quick money, retire early and return to the U.S. to enjoy my golden years.
